Sister Leonora Vargas, who was previously an employee, had no prior experience running a business when she joined the SMB program, knowing she would face obstacles to overcome, including fear of rejection and embarrassment when talking with customers. Despite that, Sister Vargas started Nora’s Snack Bar, selling peanuts, juice, and siomai. She positioned her store in front of the mall. The program helped her learn how to communicate effectively, sell products, and track her business income and expenses. Sister Varga’s first sale returned a small profit. However, with the help of a mentor, she was encouraged to increase her inventory, and eventually her sales grew. She applied the skills learned from the SMB program, especially in communication and marketing. The principle of self-reliance has had a profound effect on Sister Leonora Vargas’ family, community, and church service. Now, she can provide for her family’s needs without relying on others and contribute tithing to the church. Sister Vargas’ business has been a great help in supporting her family’s daily needs. She also developed the talents that God has given her. Through the challenges of running her business, she had grown as a person and learned to trust in God more deeply. Sister Vargas shared, “There were times I felt stressed and wanted to back out, but because of what I learned from SMB and with God’s help, I found the courage to face the challenges that came my way.” Sister Vargas is now more determined to grow her business.
